About This Program

Become proficient with three of Microsoft’s most popular software applications: Word, Outlook and Excel, the core elements of Microsoft’s globally recognized office platform. Students will get a working knowledge of the programs most used in an office setting. Learn to write and edit documents on Word, the spreadsheet capabilities of Excel and the email functionality of Outlook.

Microsoft’s signature email platform, Outlook is the most common email platform and can be found in offices around the world. This program teaches some of the most common and most used functions of Outlook, ones used daily in an office environment. Students learn to use the program’s file management system, and how to edit text, format and print files received as part of incoming mail.

What will you learn:

  • Assigning categories to tag, label and group messages
  • Use tracking options for messages
  • Set up automatic replies

Having a working knowledge of the most widely used word-processing platform in the world is essential for a business setting. Whether you’re using Windows or Macintosh computers, this course teaches you how to format and manipulate Word documents through practical, hands-on training. You’ll gain the skills you need to navigate this program with ease and confidence.

What will you learn:

  • Inserting page numbers, reusable building blocks and hyperlinks
  • How to use researcher and clipboard
  • Using field documents
  • Recording, saving, editing and running macro automated tasks

Using a hands-on approach, students will learn the intricacies of creating a functional spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel. Learn through doing by employing skill-based simulations creates a working understanding of the platform’s complexity while teaching its core features. You will learn to input and format data then create the formulas to shape that data into usable information.

With the data housed within the spreadsheet you make; you will also learn to create a variety of different charts and graphs to best illustrate your findings. Like Word and Outlook, knowing how to use Excel is vital to securing a position in an office environment.

What will you learn:

  • Calculate totals using the quick analysis tool
  • Build, edit and run queries
  • Filter and sort data using auto fillers and slicers
  • Adding, changing and forecasting values using Trendlines

Program Objectives:

Familiarize students with the basic functions of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel. These are important skills to have when working in an office setting.

  • Formatting Word and Excel documents.
  • Managing incoming and outgoing Outlook email accounts.
  • Input information and use formulas to create data from in documents.
  • Create charts and graphs from data.


All MicroDiploma courses have different grading systems. For most, it is a combination of homework, assignments, quizzes and exams. Some course grading is 100% based on assignments or exams. An example of the breakdown is listed below.

  • Homework and Lab Assignments – 40%
  • Review Quizzes – 30%
    These will test your comprehension of course materials following each section of the course.
  • Knowledge Assessments – 30%
    An overall assessment of the course material, may consist of one or more exams.

4 weeks at 20 hours per week.
