Global Business & Human Rights Module
About This Program
Examine the shared responsibility businesses and governments have in upholding human rights as mandated by the United Nations.
Throughout history, the relationship between international trade and human rights has often resulted in the mistreatment of specific members of the global community. This has resulted in slavery, displacement of indigenous populations and the destruction of ancestral lands.
Today, governments, in conjunction with the global business community are tasked with ensuring the safety of workers and indigenous populations who may be affected by a company’s business practices, be it socially or environmentally. And even as we strive to rectify the mistakes of the past, the world continues to deal with human rights issues that must be addressed regarding international business and industry.
As a business practice, many companies have embraced what is known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental Social Governance (ESG).
